The International Organization for Migration (IOM), affiliated with the United Nations, is calling for urgent assistance as increasing numbers of Yemeni refugees arrive in Djibouti, in East Africa.
Displacement linked to fighting
The humanitarian situation in Yemen is worsening as Houthi forces supported by Iran intensify their offensive against the Saudi-backed Yemeni interim government. More than 140,000 people have been forced to flee their region because of the intensifying fighting.
The United Nations also notes that more people are reaching Djibouti by sea and anticipates at least 10,000 new arrivals in the coming months.
Pressure on reception centres
Alexandre, the IOM mission chief in Djibouti, said the available tents and supplies were insufficient for evacuated people. The organization’s current priority is to establish living conditions for people who may remain in evacuation centres for several months or even years.
